Dollar Edges Higher as Traders Await Warsh's Jackson Hole Speech

The US dollar index edged higher in early trading on Thursday, extending the positive momentum from the previous session. On Wednesday, July’s PCE figures, the Federal Reserve’s preferred measure of inflation, were released and came broadly in line with market expectations. As a result, bets that the Fed will leave interest rates unchanged at its September policy meeting remained stable at 64%, according to the CME FedWatch Tool. However, short-term US Treasury yields recorded a modest increase, providing some support to the greenback. Traders are now shifting their attention to the Jackson Hole Symposium and, in particular, to Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s speech on Friday. Warsh has already made clear that he favours less forward guidance, so his challenge will be to reassure markets that the central bank remains committed to controlling inflation without committing to a predetermined course of action. Against this backdrop, his speech will be closely watched, with the potential to shift interest-rate expectations and influence the direction of the US dollar.
